Q&A: Lynn Yates, Athena Spectrum & Skilltech Solutions
Discover how Athena Spectrum supports independent training providers in navigating compliance challenges and enhancing delivery in a changing sector.
Independent training providers are navigating one of the most challenging periods the sector has seen. There is tighter funding, evolving compliance requirements, and increasing expectations around quality and accountability.
At Skilltech Solutions, we believe collaboration across the sector is key. That’s why we’re shining a light on organisations that share our commitment to supporting providers with practical, provider‑focused technology.
We spoke with Lynn Yates, MD at Cleverclogs Media, to learn more about their platform Athena Spectrum, their outlook on the sector, and how their approach complements the Skilltech Solutions ecosystem.
Tell us a bit about Athena Spectrum
Athena Spectrum is a purpose‑built suite of software applications created by Cleverclogs Multimedia LTD to support training providers delivering everything from apprenticeships and AEB to Skills Bootcamps and commercial programmes.
At the centre is Athena MIS, the engine room that holds learner profiles, ILR validation, IQA activity, staff CPD, compliance tasks, and all the data and reporting an ITP needs to stay on top of delivery.
Providers can also enable Athena ePortfolio, giving learners a clear, structured space to track progress. Our Athena eDocs tool allows teams to build digital forms and learning materials that can be completed online, improving efficiency while helping learners strengthen their digital skills.
In addition, we’ve built dedicated Employer and EQA portals, allowing external partners to sign documents, monitor progress, and complete quality assurance tasks without unnecessary back‑and‑forth.
Our focus is firmly on small and medium‑sized ITPs - providers that face the same compliance expectations as larger organisations but without the same resources. Athena is designed to give them confidence, clarity, and control without overwhelm.
Why is a system like Athena so important in today’s training sector?
ITPs are under huge pressure. Funding is tightening, apprenticeship requirements continue to shift, and providers are expected to deliver the same level of compliance as much larger organisations, often with far fewer people and resources.
Athena helps by offering a cost‑effective, all‑in‑one system where providers can manage programmes, data, and compliance in one place, without juggling multiple platforms or paying for features they don’t need.
But for us, it isn’t just about the software. We combine Athena with specialist support services that help providers navigate DfE funding rules, ILR requirements, and compliance expectations. The aim is simple: help providers draw down the funding they’re entitled to and minimise the risk of clawback.
In a constantly evolving sector, Athena gives smaller ITPs the structure, clarity, and confidence to stay compliant and focused on delivery.
Can Athena be used alongside products in the Skilltech Solutions ecosystem?
Absolutely. Athena is designed to sit comfortably alongside other sector‑leading platforms, including those within the Skilltech Solutions ecosystem.
While our systems support different parts of the learner journey, there’s clear alignment. Athena manages front‑end delivery, including ILR data, learner records, ePortfolios, digital forms, employer engagement, and compliance, while Skilltech platforms such as Proficient, Accolade, and epaPRO Assess focus on assessment management, EPA delivery, and awarding‑body workflows.
Together, they provide clarity and continuity across the learner lifecycle.
The industry has seen a lot of unexpected change recently. What do you think is next?
If recent years have shown us anything, it’s that nothing stays still for long. We’re likely to see further funding changes, more defunded apprenticeships, and continued pressure on smaller providers to do more with less.
That said, we don’t see this as a reason to panic. The ITPs we work with are some of the most adaptable organisations in the sector. They’ve weathered ongoing change, tightened budgets, and shifting expectations, and they continue to deliver for their learners.
We take the same approach. Whatever comes next, there’s always something to learn, something to improve, and something to build on. With the right systems and support, providers can stay resilient, compliant, and confident.
How are you preparing for the future of skills and training?
From a DfE perspective, change is part of the sector’s rhythm. ILR specifications evolve, funding rules update, and providers adapt.
Preparing for the future means ensuring Athena evolves at the same pace. Our development roadmap is driven directly by client needs, whether that’s responding to new compliance requirements, supporting new programme types, or making everyday delivery more intuitive.
Our role is to provide stability and clarity in a sector that never stands still. As the future of skills and training continues to shift, Athena will keep adapting, always with the goal of making providers’ lives easier.
What do you love most about your role?
Because we’re a small and agile team, my role is incredibly varied. One moment we’re developing new platform features, the next we’re helping a provider work through a complex funding or compliance challenge.
I get to work closely with clients in ways that feel genuinely meaningful, solving problems, building solutions, and often having a good laugh along the way.
It’s a role full of variety and challenge, a bit like a really good buffet. There’s always something new to get stuck into, and it keeps us closely connected to the people we’re here to support.
Working together to support providers

Athena Spectrum and Skilltech Solutions share a common goal: giving independent training providers the tools, clarity, and confidence they need to deliver high‑quality provision in a complex regulatory environment.
By combining robust systems with sector expertise, partnerships like this help ensure providers are not just keeping up, but moving forward with confidence.
